Part of the family
This kitchen embraces its surroundings, opening to a family space, an alfresco area and laundry – an island with both casual dining and breakfast zones was part of the mix

From the designer:
Kitchen space was an essential part of a new house we designed for the young growing family in Rydalmere.
The brief
The homeowner requested a few features essential for them:
• The kitchen has to be separate from the formal dining room.
• The oversized island bench to accommodate food preparation space and a table for the family to eat together.
• The kitchen table part of the bench to be of a standard table height.

• Display glass cabinets to be part of the kitchen.
• Kitchen to be located next to the family room or combined.
• Laundry to be accessible from the kitchen area and have external access.
• The adjacent formal dining room to accommodate bar joinery with a full-height wine cabinet and under-the-counter drinks fridge.
• The bar joinery to be designed in the same style as the kitchen and to accommodate shelves for wine bottles and glass hangers.
• The owner specifically asked for the darker colour joinery.
The response
We designed the kitchen as a separate space that would also be used as a family room.
The kitchen has space for a sofa and TV and opens into a large alfresco area connected with the backyard and a small spa pool.
