The owners and the aesthetic

The homeowners had fairly conventional ideas and taste but were happy to be pushed a little into something more exciting. In terms of design aesthetics, they wanted the bathroom to have a luxury feel with rich finishes and they also wanted it to be a place to relax.

Physical requirements

In terms of inclusions, the owners wanted a view from the bath and from the shower; a strong connection to the outdoors; a double vanity; good size shower with place for shampoos etc; and floor-to-ceiling tiling.

Constraints, solutions and design elements

• There was limited area to build on the site with an odd shaped building platform so the footprint for the bathroom was constrained
• Given the fantastic view – there were no other building sites beyond theirs to the beach – one end of the bathroom could not be used for the shower or vanity and the other end had the door into the bathroom so the shower location was a problem.
• However, putting the bath in the shower enclosure solved this with the owners being able to shower or bath and enjoy the view
• The homeowners had seen the Rubi Vanity from Robertson and loved the colour along with the bowls and this formed the basis for the colour palette which gives the en-suite its rich luxurious feel

• Double framing the outside wall allowed for the long slot niche that runs across the shower/bath enclosure providing a place for both shower and bath to put shampoos etc.
• The double frame also allowed for recessed mirror cabinets for extra storage.
• We also worked with the electrician to put LED strip lighting in the recessed slot niche and this soft lighting contributed to the bathroom’s relaxed feel.
• Lastly, the strong masculine fittings went well with the rich tones in the tiles and vanity.
