Project Description

This Lakeview home takes a unique approach to city living by dramatically integrating with the landscape.

The owners, a couple with three children, wanted a private, yet light-filled home with a strong connection to the outdoors.

Programme requirements included open-plan living with space for art, master suite with private deck and spa, gym, rooftop sport court, and a children’s hangout room with bunks for sleepovers.

A key design feature of the home is slab-on-grade construction which locates interior and exterior spaces at the same level, promoting indoor-outdoor living.

A double-height great room with a window wall and oversized sliding doors amplifies the connection to the outdoors, which includes a dining patio, built-in BBQ, and a fireplace lounge defined by a steel pergola with an oculus.

The facade of the home, clad in warm, standing seam zinc panels, is composed of three parallel planes that step back from the street.

This design preserves privacy while permitting framed views through floor-to-ceiling windows inset between the planes.

A garden of trees and weathered steel planters guide a path to the front door. The effect is both striking and subdued.

The south-facing rear elevation is defined by bevelled zinc portals that provide solar shading and focused views toward the skyline.

These dynamic details complement outdoor spaces, including an oversized yard and textural plantings.

The master suite includes a two-sided fireplace that opens to a private roof terrace with a built-in spa overlooking the city.

Sustainable elements include durable and recycled material, high efficiency mechanicals, a tight thermal envelope, high-efficiency windows, and drought-tolerant native plantings.
