Specifying materials that reflect the local landscape is often a key element in the design of a tourist facility. For the Tussock Peak Motor Lodge in Hanmer, it made sense to design a building that would acknowledge the beauty of the alpine surroundings.

The lodge also needed to have good street appeal and a sense of luxury says architectural designer Murray Brown.

"To achieve such a look, the design incorporates Linea weatherboards over concrete block, wide verandas and covered decks. Local river stone features at the base of the pillars," he says.

"As the size of the building meant a large amount of the roof would be visible, we chose a textured Gerard Corona Shake roof in Charcoal."

Brown says this roofing complements the plaster and timber finishes. It also fits with local council regulations that require a building's design, colour and materials to be in keeping with the alpine location.

"From an engineering viewpoint, the light weight of the Gerard roofing was another reason for its choice," says Brown.

Gerard Roofs products are designed for the New Zealand climate, tolerating extremes of heat and cold. The company says its roofing is nailed through the rolled, leading edge of the tile, which makes it very secure and completely watertight.

The roofing comes with a 50-year pro rata weatherproof warranty.
