The owner brief was simple – ‘It needs to be Organic’ and to use as many ‘Natural’ materials as possible to enhance the overall scheme and provide a place of harmony with nature.Design responseThe kitchen design was simplified from the architects plan to allow the main feature for the kitchen to be for a large central Island with an asymmetric back wall to incorporate all of the appliances and designed to face the expansive views and flow to the adjacent areas. Once the design footprint was confirmed the focus turned to the use of materials and for the island, we wanted to create something special. The homeowner is an art dealer and her home is littered with many fine pieces of art. I wanted the island to be a work of Art as well so I worked tirelessly to create an island made entirely from a natural marble. This included making the benchtop, drawer fronts, recessed handles, kick-boards and sink all from the same marble material. 12mm natural honed marble was specified and exquisitely made by fine craftspeople in Germany for the complete effect. To further the island’s symmetrical presence, I created a false front on the end of the island to hide the seating area from view. This created a perfect contrast for the appearance of the symmetrical island to the asymmetrical back wall – replicating nature, where nothing is perfectly matched but rather organic in its true form. The back wall of tall and base cabinetry was made from rough sawn timber. The wood cabinetry and the muted perimeter benchtop and splashback do not distract from the stunning marble island, but rather enhance the connection to nature through texture and colour. This kitchen reflects drama and a marriage of elements that blend cohesively into the wider space. The design features colour, harmony, balance, and texture to enrich the overall scheme – creating the organic and natural kitchen that the homeowner desired.
