Retiring baby-boomers have their own set of expectations when it comes to retirement living. Not content with the beige-and-floral rest-home look, they have created a demand for facilities that reflect individuality, modernity and innovation.

This philosophy has been taken on board by Chow Hill Architects in the design of two Living Choices complexes for Presbyterian Support (Northern), one of which is the Woodlands Apartments at Trevellyn in Hamilton.

The developments are based on research by Presbyterian Support, which showed an overwhelming desire among older people to remain in their homes, maintain community links and keep control over their choices. The surveys also showed baby-boomers are eager to experiment with innovative design and quick to demand modern technologies.

Chow Hill Architects' Total Design Philosophy allowed the company to integrate architecture, interior design, landscaping, health planning and international urban design principles into one cohesive village environment. The company says the initiative reflects the market's refusal to accept inappropriate stereotypes.
