Surrounded by native bush, views of the beautiful surroundings are thoughtfully framed from each internal space. The design of this home is centred on celebrating the existing bush, which acts as riparian planting to the natural stream to the front of the site. The floor plan optimises views to the surrounding vegetation, including a large protected Pohutukawa to the southern boundary. The sense of tranquillity is also explored throughout the home, with window placement carefully considered to frame views. The first floor features multiple void spaces open to the floor below, which further enhances the feeling of verticality amongst the trees. The home hinges an L shaped plan on the exterior corner to the north, allowing the faces of the longest edges of the building to catch the light, which floods the courtyards provided to the rear of the house. The exterior materials were carefully selected to allow the home to settle gently into the tranquil, native bush surroundings, while the use of timber features across the interior spaces speak to the outside environment. With a neighbouring home located close to the northern boundary, the main living spaces were placed in relation to the densest area of riparian by the edges of the central stream. This achieved both privacy and an outlook to the surrounding tree canopies.Vertical timber screens to the entry and outdoor spaces elongate the façades upwards while serving practical purposes through shading weather and increasing privacy.
