When the owners of this rural property began the process of designing their new home, they also started looking for a cladding that would suit their site and give it a personal touch.

They found the answer in Matamata at the quarry of Hinuera Natural Stone, a specialist in natural stone building products. Because Hinuera stone was formed in volcanic eruptions over a million years ago, every piece is durable and individual.

Hinuera Natural Stone quarries the raw blocks from a local hillside before transporting them to its own factory, where the stone is cut into standard and custom-sized pieces for building purposes.

For this home, built by David Reid Homes Waikato, the owners selected Hinuera's vitric-grade stone because they admired its appearance: pieces of pumice and small shards of metal are interspersed through each piece. Hinuera stone forms the exterior plinth courses, quoins, lintels over the entry portico and garage door, and the impressive columns on the north side of the house. It has also been used to craft the fire surround in the lounge.
