In this kitchen, brass and wood take centre stage

This minimalist, natural look kitchen includes a sculptural island, a feature brass rangehood cover and a large, light-filled scullery directly behind

Designed by architect Tim Dagg, Sheppard & Rout Architects

From the architects:

For this kitchen, one owner had previously worked for a specialist catering company, so had specific requirements for the layout of the spaces.

As the owners entertain frequently, they specifically didn’t want a sink in the island as the island is a place to gather around, as well as being part of a working kitchen.

As this meant there was no sink in the front kitchen, two sinks are incorporated into the scullery, one with a standard tap and detachable spout and the other with multifunction hot water tap.

A variety of finishes were used throughout the kitchen and scullery. The scullery has no external windows (for privacy from neighbours) so to make the room feel light, a large skylight was introduced along with white Prime Melamine joinery.

In addition, a mirror forms part of the drinks display at the inner end of the scullery and this gives depth to the room.

Stainless steel is used on the benches in both the scullery and around the hobs in the kitchen as a practical work surface.

Timber panelling and veneer are used extensively through the house so in keeping with this, Prime Art veneer is used on the joinery fronts to the kitchen.

The hard working kitchen includes a 900mm wide oven, an induction hob and a gas hob for charring food etc.

The house itself incorporates several natural materials including a concrete floor, a mild steel balustrade and a steel wall lining – so following on from this we finished the rangehood cover in brass.

As the kitchen is part of the open plan living area, a remote extract fan is used to reduce the noise in the kitchen.

The island has been designed as a sculptural element within the wider space, with the angled plan mimicking the angle in the house plan. Furthering the pared back, abstracted look, the island is finished in matt Fenix with no handles to the drawers.
