An insertion of a modest new room to this home provides a light filled cooking and dining space, complete with a relocatable island on castors

Designed by Sarah Kahn Architect

• This project involved a renovation and a small addition to an existing Edwardian terrace house for a young family in Brunswick, Melbourne.

• Central to the brief was creating a special and unique space for cooking and dining, together with direct connection to the garden and maximising the northern orientation.

• The brief was met with minimal changes to the original house and insertion of just a single new celebratory room which provides a light filled cooking and dining space.

• The addition sits with the same footprint as the original house so the entire existing bush garden to the rear of the house has been retained.

• The new kitchen needed to be large enough to allow the entire family to cook together and flexible enough in design so the space could be used for other daily activities including meals, homework, gathering with friends and family.

• For the owners, the kitchen was really the heart of their home and the place of all their social gatherings and activity.

• The design of the kitchen makes the most of the modest size and is entirely constructed from plywood for a cohesive but textured look.

• One long stainless steel workbench on the eastern wall houses the sink, cooktop and oven – this allows the island bench to be free of fixtures entirely so it can be used flexibly; the island is also set on castors so it can be entirely removed from the room when required.

• Full height cupboards conceal the fridge and a large pantry and appliances area at the end of the main kitchen bench.

• The main kitchen work area is contained within a plywood box surround which provides space for plants to be set on the top, benefiting from the light from the high level windows – strip LED lights are set along the top panel also, up-lighting the high raked ceiling.
