Modern bathroom benefits from balanced layout and a light-filled shower

Not every bathroom reveals all its features as soon as you enter. The main bathing and vanity zone here is all light and mirrors, but natural light is introduced at the rear.

The owners had wanted a modern ambience for their new home, without it feeling extreme, says architect Taras Wolf, who designed the house and ensuite, with material input coming from interior designer Penny Del Castillo.

“The resulting contemporary architecture translated well into the home’s interior design which is elegant with a timeless feel,” says Wolf.

“Part of the owners’ wishes had been to achieve a strong emotional resonance for the interior, and this included this master ensuite.

“To achieve this feel in the bathroom, we looked at everything from materiality through to lighting – creating a bathing space with warmth, strong materials and a pleasing symmetry.”

A central feature of the master ensuite is a freestanding stone bath. This is accentuated by the elegant backdrop of a Dekton-finished wall, which includes a niche suitable to rest a glass of wine on while enjoying a blissful soak.

Hidden behind this wall is the twin shower, above which a full-width skylight provides for the luxury of showering under the sky or stars.

The layout is geometrical and symmetrical but at the same time practical, with everything to hand including generous open storage.

The central bath and shower zone separates the generous his and hers vanities which are located on opposite sides of the room.

High-quality materials, both natural and synthetic, were utilised throughout the bathroom, but luxury finishes were introduced with some restraint. The architect and interior designer were conscious that stand-out surfaces could detract from the focal point of the design.

“Brushed copper fixtures were chosen to complement the robust stone tilework and also to add a touch of glamour,” says Del Castillo.

Every element in this ensuite exudes a refined ambience, without resorting to sparkle. The outcome is a restrained yet luxe aesthetic.
