Mixing it up

Industrial forms & natural materials are paired with custom cabinetry to deliver a simple yet elegant dessert-focussed kitchen

Designed by Lori Carroll & Associates

From the designer:

It is often said that you can have too much of a good thing.

While some may think using the same material for multiple surfaces is a recipe for an unimaginative home, when done with precision, it can lead to incredible design.

By embracing a standout piece to anchor the room, then choosing complementary finishes & clean-lined forms, a space can be imagined that is simultaneously minimal, yet dynamic.

In this project, the owner's request was simple: an updated kitchen that would deliver high-end style and everyday practicality.

A spectacular slab of Cielo quartzite delivered immediate inspiration, with clean lines introduced throughout to highlight what nature had already created.

Serving as the countertop and splashback, the leathered stone grounds the space, delivering immediate visual interest.

Walnut cabinetry with integrated pulls allows for optimum function and simplicity while a custom metal rangehood cover is an unexpected accent.

Despite the minimalist design, even the smallest details are addressed with utmost care.

These include the integration of appliances into cabinetry from the millwork fabricator and precise book-matched installation to ensure that the veining in the calacatta quartzite flooring is continuous.

Lighting is critical, illuminating prep space and highlighting the textural beauty of the finishes.

Keeping the existing fixture over the island adds an industrial touch and helped save on the costs/lead times of a new fixture.

Cabinetry lighting was a strategic addition, enhancing the natural movement in the stone & delivering a greater sense of modernity.

Appliances were of the utmost importance in this project, with specific units enhancing the owner's daily cooking experience.

A Fisher + Paykel dishwasher, with custom wood panels, delivers a seamless look and everyday utility, while a suite of new appliances from Sub-Zero, Wolf & Cove brings optimum functionality.

A variety of stainless-steel plumbing fixtures co-ordinate perfectly with the rest of the space.
