Brief

The owners were professionals with adult children running multiple businesses and the design had to respond to that busy environment.
Renovations to existing home were necessary to create the space required and fulfil the owners' wish list.
The owners wanted the kitchen to complement the 2004 Mediterranean-style home's architecture and style with a calm, luxurious, and relaxing atmosphere.
The new kitchen needed multiple spaces because both owners cook.
The coffee machine is frequently used, so a separate area was needed.
A laundry space was required, with sorting system for dirty laundry.
Seating area with barstools were requested – for many guests to relax and enjoy without the need to use the formal dining room.
The materials had to be suitable to withstand the owners' love of cooking.

Setting

My homeowners are a professional couple with older children who do not live at home.

With its large size and swimming pool, the home is the hub for many gatherings.

Originally, the project was just to replace the existing kitchen with something more functional within the same space.

However, we discovered that we couldn't achieve everything that the owners wanted within the existing space, so we engaged an architect and began extensive renovations.

The kitchen was moved into the space created by pushing the entire back wall out and rearranging it so that traffic now flows past the kitchen instead of through it.

With the walls altered, there was an opportunity to create a much larger laundry and add a scullery, which was a definite request of the owners.

In the end, the outdoor lounge area did not originate from a wish list item, but it is now the most frequently used room in the house.

The beautiful ceiling was already present in the home and bringing it through the extension ensured the spaces aligned and didn't feel like an addition.

In the details

In order to finish the cabinetry against the battens, a lot of planning and discussions were had between the manufacturer and builder.

To detail drawings for the cantilever benchtop, an engineer was enlisted – we knew within the design that legs would take away from the beauty of the marble breakfast bar.

After the stunning In Residence mesh arrived from England, it was the wrong finish/colour – luckily, one of the owners was heading to England on business and managed to arrange to pick up new panels while there and bring them home with him on his flight so we could install them in time.

To ensure everything was cohesive throughout the entire home, an interior designer assisted with scullery splashback tiles, floor selection, and veneer stain colour selection.
