From the designer:

The brief for the master suite within a Grade II listed manor was to create a sanctuary with 21st century style and functionality and a light, spacious feel, whilst celebrating the building’s fabric and the owners’ love of wood.

Specifically:

Create bedroom, ensuite, dressing room, sitting area, library and study with physical and visual connections
Enjoy views in all directions
Capacious storage
Spaces to display sculpture

The overall approach was to enhance the beauty of historic materials and vistas through simplicity of design. White walls and predominantly white furnishings provide a backdrop and timber was the singular material used for all joinery, furniture and most flooring.

By amalgamating three bedrooms and removing an upper-floor bedroom, a substantial double-height suite was created with a stunning alabaster sculpture as its focal point. This incorporates bedroom, ensuite, dressing room, sitting area, library and glass-floored, mezzanine-level study, all with spectacular views of the garden.

For the ensuite we designed a T-shaped teak ‘pod’ to house shower, double vanity, floor-to-ceiling storage and display niches and screen the WC from view.

The centrally positioned pod allowed original stone walls, oak beams and fireplace to be exposed, aesthetically connecting with similarly exposed materials in other areas, and enabled vistas to be maximised.

From the teak-walled shower, a screen (clear above shoulder height) allows views across the orchard, and floor-to-ceiling glass gives a visual connection to the bedroom, allowing a view of the alabaster sculpture through switchable privacy glass.

The bespoke sculptural teak bath has a remote-operated self-filling mechanism allowing it to sit unencumbered in the centre of its space, with spectacular views over the valley. The bath’s curve echoes the white resin floor’s curve separating the ensuite from timber-floored hallway.

The richness of marine-grade teak, chosen for ‘pod’ and bath, complements the honey-coloured Cotswold stone walls and windows and is highlighted against the crisp white resin floor.

The beauty of wood continues with walnut-fronted wardrobes in the dressing area and pale oak flooring running the hallway’s length, through a widened doorway to the bedroom area and continuing up the headboard. Barn-style doors, made from floorboards perfectly matched to joints of the floor, join and slide to close the bedroom from the ensuite.

In the bedroom area, bringing the bed forward in the space enabled views of the garden and allowed creation of a relaxed sitting area behind the headboard.

The upper-floor, accessed from the suite's hallway via an historic staircase, has a secluded library and mezzanine study with desk positioned before the stunning vista from second-floor window. The remarkable glass floor minimises visual interruption to the vaulted space created.

High-end fittings were specified throughout the suite and numerous areas for display of sculpture were created.

The design has enabled the historic fabric to be exposed which, fused with contemporary materials and high-end fittings, creates a unique luxurious sanctuary providing all the 21st century functionality desired whilst embracing the spectacular views both internally and externally.
