Lively, interesting, and good with kids

The homeowners wanted the family bathroom in this extensive villa renovation to be lively and interesting.

They also wanted their children to feel uplifted and energised when bathing in this space.

The room is relatively small, with a lower-than-normal ceiling height for a villa.

Win response, we used bold large format terrazzo tiles on the floor.

The large chips of varying colours make a bold statement and draw your attention to the floor, away from the ceiling height.

Two walls were lined in the stunning matte Rosa tile, from the Kaufmann Keramik collection.

The form of these tiles adds a very tailored and structured level of detail.

The colour of the wall tile is complemented by the chips of stone in the terrazzo floor.

We made the decision to keep the remaining two walls simple and understated, with elongated matte white wall tiles.

A peek of colour is used in the shampoo recess, with the repetition of the terrazzo floor tile.

We decided to retain the architectural details of the existing room, with the traditional scotia, architraves and ceiling battens being used.

This added interest and a nod to the past.

They also provided a nice juxtaposition to the modern bathroom fittings and custom-made vanity.

The large, oversized charcoal grey concrete bath anchors the room and acts as a focal point.

The custom-made vanity was pared back and simple.

The cabinetry fronts are made from fumed charcoal oak, which adds a depth of colour and texture.

The brushed brass bathroom fittings provide warmth and interest to the room and the ‘living’ finish will allow the products to age gracefully over time.

This complements the ruggedness of the concrete bath and terrazzo floor tiles.

An arched mirror, with the subtle black metal frame is highlighted nicely by the two thin yet dramatic feature wall lights, in a brushed brass finish.

Overall, the mix of classic and modern and diverse material finishes created a lively space that makes exuberant children feel right at home.
