It's not a mirage

This pool rolls over a waterfall and winds down a stream before meeting the spa pool at its far end

We may all daydream about time spent round a resort's pool, but for most of us this is not an everyday option. The answer may lie in bringing a touch of the resort to our home.

Many properties don't have the room to accommodate a resort-style pool setting, but at the Mirage Parnell space was set aside for just this purpose, says developer Greg Kernohan.

"We wanted to leave some land available for a resort-style setting rather than just build all over the site," he says.

In keeping with this idea of a resort theme, the main pool has been developed as more than just somewhere to swim laps. It takes a varied form, ranging from a deep pool at one end to a large spa at the other. The two are joined by a river-like run of water covering a distance of 60m, allowing bathers to swim from one end to the other. One of the pool's designers, Neil Runciman from Frontier Pools, says the idea was to bring a lagoon and beach atmosphere to the inner city.

"The design also includes a waterfall and a sandy beach entrance to emphasise the tropical image," he says.

Other naturalistic devices intended to add to the sense of a lagoon environment are the tropical plantings, which include a stand of foliage in the middle of the main pool. There is also an area of rock work, created using concrete, lining the edges of the waterfall.

To keep the heating of this pool and the apartments' indoor lap and spa pools cost effective, the pump and reticulation system is linked with the apartments' air conditioning. This means the air conditioning units are effectively used as a giant wetback heating system.

Another innovation in the design is that the outdoor pools do not use tiling, instead being finished with a plaster that rolls over the edge to act as coping too. This acts to give the design a less formal and more organic appearance.
