Open to soaring contemporary living spaces and an al fresco area, this white, bright kitchen boasts two islands – one for work and one for play

Designed by Adyn Kelly, Adyn Kelly Design

From the designer:

This was an extensive renovation project of a small townhouse in Subiaco, Western Australia.

The renovation involved substantial demolition works and an extensive rejig of the existing spaces to better utilise the natural light and flow of the home from one space to the next together. Plus there was the addition of a new master suite and garage below.

We were engaged to bring a cohesive warmth to the home through the interiors – to create a soft calming feel away from the nearby hustle and bustle of the little inner-city suburb for our homeowner.

We looked to create an open, flexible entertaining space that could be utilised in different ways depending on weather or time of year.

With large bi-fold doors from the kitchen and dining opening onto the al fresco area, this transforms the home and adds another dimension – enlarging the space and bringing in summer breezes while still managing to retain an intimate and private feel.

This area has become an integral area in the home.

With the house centred around the heart of the home – the kitchen – we took the decision to break it up into two distinct areas with two island units.

One is the functional working area of the kitchen with sink and prep areas opposite the cooktop.

The second island is for socialising and entertaining at dinner parties, and includes built-in champagne storage  and a wine fridge.

With the materials and palette of the home we took a similar approach, opting for a timeless feel with gorgeous natural tones from the marble, grey stained oak flooring, dark timber cabinetry and subtle changes of colour to the vinyl wrapped cabinets.

These surfaces are complemented with different textures of brushed and honed stone, oil finish timber and gloss vinyl to give a subtle distinction between spaces and play with the natural light bouncing off these surfaces.

This was especially evident with the use of grey mirrors to walls and cabinetry reflecting the outdoors. The mirrors also give certain unwanted walls a sense of invisibility.
