Redeveloping Auckland Airport while it remained open demanded a high level of co-ordination among airport authorities and construction teams

Stores in retail spaces such as shopping malls or foodcourts need to be individually recognisable, while still acknowledging the overall aesthetic of the larger space. For chain stores, elements of their branding, such as a themed layout, may need adjusting to fit into these environments.

As part of the recently completed Auckland International Airport upgrade, the Pier A foodcourt highlights this type of design integration.

Hawkins Interiors worked alongside architectural firm Redesign in constructing the foodcourt area, which included the fit-out of a bar, a cafeteria and a fast food chain restaurant. Project managerGraham Smith of Hawkins Interiors says the overall appearance of the foodcourt area was important in creating an instant appeal with customers and foot traffic.

"We used quality materials with hard-wearing and durable finishes to create an inviting environment that will continue to appeal," he says.

"There needed to be a sense of cohesion among the foodcourt and retail stores, as they all open out into the same shared space."
