How to add a waterfall to your garden

There can be few more calming sounds than that of moving water. Here are some guidelines to creating your own backyard water feature

Story from water-garden.co.uk

Water soothes the soul

White noise is soothing, and there's no better white noise than the sound of moving water. The reason why we find the sound of water so soothing is physiological. Of course, the biggest benefits are found when we are physically in water.

When in water, our heart rates slow and our body shifts and adapts. Water also has a “blue health” benefit much the same way that green spaces have a “green health” benefit.

In fact, while parks are great, they are infinitely improved when a blue element, or water feature, is included.

Water is beautiful. It is powerful. It’s an element we can simultaneously relax to and be invigorated by.

Serenity begins at home

The best way to enjoy all the benefits that being near water can hold is by installing it right into your own garden.

This does not always mean a pool. In fact many of the benefits above can be enjoyed by adding a waterfall or a water blade.

All you need to add a waterfall is to follow these steps below, and once you do you will be enjoying so much more of the natural world:

1. How much space do you have?

There are a lot of options when it comes to how you install a waterfall into your garden. The good news is that you do not need to have a full pond or lake to do it.

There are many closed-loop waterfalls that are easy and small enough to add to your garden.

They require very little maintenance, other than a clean once in a while, and can add a great element to the soundscape of your space.

If you have a huge amount of land to work with, however, then you can build a natural looking waterfall, complete with either a lake or a pond.

It depends entirely on how much space you have, and the look that you are going for.

2. What kind of aesthetic suits you?

If in doubt, always opt for a waterfall that looks as natural as possible. It will go well with any design, even if it technically clashes.

That being said, there are many great waterfall designs that you can add to your space.

Water walls and water blades are very, very popular for a reason.

They can help cool a space, they look absolutely stunning, and they are very lean, making them great even in small gardens.

3. Work with a professional

Just because you think a certain type of waterfall will work in your garden, it doesn’t mean it necessarily will. That’s okay! Having an idea of what you want is exactly the jumping off point you need.

From there, you will want to find a professional who can come in and help you understand exactly what your options are – right down to how deep you can realistically dig.

4. When to hire, when to DIY

Some waterfalls are very easy to install yourself. Small, self-containing waterfalls or cascading water features just need water, power, and to be placed where you want them to be.

Others need a team to install, especially if you want your waterfall to be integrated into a larger design.
