Working with the contours of a site can sometimes be a challenge for landscape designers, but it can also result in an innovative design approach, as the project on these pages illustrates.

The owners of the property wanted a pool and outdoor entertaining area built at the rear of their home, on a site that sloped up from the house, says landscape designer Gudrun Fischer.

"This is a very secluded part of the property that doesn't link to any other outdoor living areas. Consequently, it provided the opportunity to create a special garden room," she says. "As it is overlooked by the living areas of the house there was a need to create an attractive setting that would look good at all times of the day and night."

A three-tiered landscape was designed to accommodate the slope. The pool, which was custom built by Mayfair Pools, is positioned on the middle level. A grove of olive trees above the pool helps secure the slope.

Existing old bricks were used to create a walled landscape, which is enhanced by night lighting. Plastered surfaces and wood louvre doors either side of a large, open fireplace add to the European look.

The pool features a long, curved edge, highlighted by a high red wall that incorporates a sheer waterfall.

Mayfair Pools says the curve of the pool wall towards the living room windows visually creates a sense of flow between the indoors and outdoors. Colours inside the home are featured in the pool landscape, which also helps connect the two spaces.

As with all Mayfair pools, this pool was built from fibreglass on site using a patented construction method developed in Hawkes Bay during the 1960s. The fibreglass is earthquake-proof, low maintenance and resistant to pool-water impurities. The company's pools also come with an unconditional guarantee.
