From dysfunctional to delightful

 Project overview 

This renovation involved the transformation of a unique property that was weighed down with outdated styling and dysfunctional spaces. 

Our design for the prime waterfront location resulted in a sophisticated and relaxing retreat for our homeowners. 

The primary objective was to create a welcoming and functional living space where the owners could escape from their busy work lives, host family and friends, and enjoy a sense of tranquillity.

Space reconfiguration 

The existing closed-off and disjointed living spaces were opened to create a coherent flow throughout the house. 

This involved removing walls, repositioning rooms, and optimising the use of available space. 

The primary living areas were reimagined to maximise natural light and create a flow from indoors to outdoors.

Interior design

The interior design was modern and sophisticated, with a focus on comfort and functionality. 

High-quality materials, finishes, and furnishings were selected to create a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere. 

The design emphasised neutral colour palettes, with pops of colour and texture to add visual interest. 

Inspired by the beautiful marble floor in the entry, we added herringbone French oak floors throughout the ground floor.

Kitchen and family area 

The kitchen was completely renovated to feature state-of-the-art appliances, ample storage, and a functional layout. 

The wall between this and the former billiard room was removed to provide a generous breakfast area and informal family room. 

A large sill-less, gas-strut window opens from the kitchen for outdoor entertaining. 

The existing timber panelling was painted and a new gas fireplace with limestone chimney breast was incorporated to anchor the space.

Dining and living spaces 

The living room was redesigned to accommodate both formal and informal seating areas. 

New stacking sliders were incorporated throughout to provide easy flow to the alfresco and pool areas.

Bedrooms and bathrooms

The bedrooms were updated with classic contemporary design elements. 

The bathrooms were reconfigured to provide better flow and renovated to include luxurious fixtures and a consistent design language throughout.

Outdoor retreat 

The outdoor spaces were transformed into a private oasis, featuring travertine to the patio, landscaping, and a sunken alfresco seating area on the boat shed roof featuring the marble from the original kitchen repurposed as an outdoor coffee table. 

A serene atmosphere was created to encourage relaxation and outdoor entertainment.

Structural changes

Removing walls and reconfiguring spaces involved structural modifications to the middle level of three floors, which required careful planning and engineering to ensure the integrity of the building.

Material sourcing and delays 

Due to disruptions in supply chains during the pandemic, sourcing high-quality materials and finishes experienced delays, requiring close co-ordination with suppliers.

This metamorphosis has breathed new life into a once-dated 1980s brick home, turning it into a captivating coastal retreat for our discerning owners.
