This is the ensuite for the master bedroom in a new home located right on the waters’ edge of Ihutai, the Avon Heathcote Estuary in Christchurch.

Because of its location, the owners wanted a natural, coastal feel combined with a contemporary, fresh look.

The ensuite sits within a first-floor master bedroom suite at the waterside end of the house.

As well as the ensuite bathroom, the master suite features a walk-in robe and a spacious bedroom that opens out to a balcony overlooking the Estuary.

A high ceiling that follows the line of the roof above provides a large volume of space and contributes towards the open, spacious feel.

The floor comprises porcelain floor tiles in grey and white tones that reflect the pebbles found on the estuary seabed. The bathroom walls are finished in white ceramic tiles on some walls, with the toilet door and wall in green glass, matching the glass in the shower stall.

New Zealand-made glass mosaic tiles feature in the large shower and provide full height accent colour to the space. The aqua and teal marine tones reflect light, similar to paua shells.

While the ensuite is already private, a “boxed” window frame with white timber venetians enhances that sense of privacy and adds softness and texture.

Oval porcelain bowls sit on a granite vanity with a large mirror above that reflects and visually opens up the space further. The grey blue granite features a washed pattern similar to the currents of the Estuary outside.

The toilet is tucked behind a translucent glass screen and door while the freestanding bath sits comfortably down one side of the space.

Our en-suite is a light and invigorating space that is a pleasure to use each morning to prepare for a new day by the water. And in the evening the design allows for softer lighting providing a more relaxing atmosphere.
