The brief

The brief was to create an opulent Master Ensuite with a luxurious feel, reminiscent of a high-end Melbourne day spa. 

The owners wanted the master ensuite to be a place to escape the chaos of the daily rigours of work and family life, with the ease and practicality of easy relaxation seamlessly embedded into the design elements.

The colour scheme suggested was bold and moody, creating a calm and dim atmosphere in which to unwind.

Being a space of relaxation, the owners wanted quality and practical finishes and fixtures that would stand the

test of time and require little maintenance. 

This space has been moulded to the owners' lifestyle and wishes to the utmost extent. 

With four young children to care for, the master ensuite can provides a space where the owners can escape and disentangle themselves from the stresses of the day.

The resolution

The dimensions of this master ensuite presented us with a unique opportunity to create a bold theme of contrast between light and dark. 

The space evolved from a blank canvas as part of a full new home design and build.

We created a daring, dark interior palette to contrast with the light streaming in from the 2 linear skylights; one 5m tall directly above the free standing bath, and the other above the double shower. 

The long, narrow space (7.5m x 3.7m) allowed us to play with dark Royale marble and textured matte black oval

mosaic tiles without the space feeling enclosed. 

The dominant feature marble set the tone for the entire space, and the double vanity keeps with the dark tones, allowing for plenty of storage space for the homeowner. 

The spacious shower sits in the middle of the south wall, between the toilets, and a glass wall separates the showers and toilets from each other and the rest of the space. 

The floors were set up during construction to ensure that there were no step ups or down to the shower, and are heated below for comfort. 

Tile insert linear floor wastes were custom made to suit the size of the shower, providing a seamless aesthetic that doesn’t distract from the more bespoke features. 

Keeping with the owners' wishes, we included two toilets in the ensuite. 

The position of the toilets created convenience for both owners, symmetry within the space, and also allowed for natural ventilation due to the positioning of the windows. 

Overall, the thoughtful design elements create a luxurious space – rich in texture and bold in colour. 

The attention to detail and execution of work has been completed to the highest standard, with each element of the owners' brief as the driving force behind the finished master ensuite.

A leading inspiration

A trip to the stone wholesaler to investigate materials for the entire home ended up providing the inspiration for

this master ensuite when we spotted the Royale slabs of marble at CDK Stone. 

We were immediately drawn to the exquisite colour, texture and veining in the stone which formed the base for the entire concept and colour palette. 

Depending on the time of day, the natural light brings out different hues within the stone. 

It can change from day to night and every viewing provides a new feast for the eyes.
