During the process of looking for appliances for a new kitchen, most of us are likely to consider them from a variety of points of view appearance, practicality and function, affordability, and their reputation.

When interior designer Deborah Schmideg of DKO Architecture + Interiors renovated the kitchen in her home, she drew on previous experience.

"I had recently specified Smeg appliances for the kitchens of 144 apartments in the city, and was pleased with the result. Smeg appliances are practical and simple to use you don't need to get the manual out every time you cook. They're also easy to keep clean, and their contemporary design works well in most modern kitchens," she says.

For her own kitchen, Schmideg selected a gas cooktop, a double oven and a semi-integrated dishwasher from Smeg's stainless steel range. These are teamed with reconstituted stone benchtops and cabinetry finished in a white, two-pot lacquer.

The main oven in Smeg's 60cm double oven offers a range of functions including fan forced, conventional and fan baking, defrosting, grilling and fan grilling. To supplement this, a smaller auxiliary oven provides a grill, conventional baking and base element cooking. A removable, triple-glazed door and stay-clean liners in both ovens ensure cleaning is easy. And with an electronic clock/timer, the oven can be programmed to come on and turn off when you are out.

Smeg's 90cm gas hob has five burners, including a fish burner and wok burner, all with heavy-duty trivets and automatic electronic ignition.

The semi-integrated dishwasher includes five wash programmes and a delay timer. It is designed for 12 place settings and offers a five-stage filter system to ensure consistent wash results.
