An industrial edge, retractable door system and great material connections give this kitchen a dramatic presence ideal for entertaining

Designed by Dean Welsh, ThinkDzine Interiors

From the designer:

Design brief

The owner wanted the kitchen to be the centrepiece of the living area, a subtle commercial/semi industrial statement.

Materials specified had to stand up to heavy use in the kitchen.

The owner loves to entertain so the kitchen had to have impact.

Part of the design consideration were the angled windows and door detail at the back of the ground floor, which made the connection between the larger kitchen space to the dining area.

Also requested was changing the back area shape, squaring off the windows and doors, and changing the access points to the balcony to help create better open space for the kitchen and dining area.

Design statement

Loving to entertain, the homeowner wanted to have the fridge, pantry and cooking zones to be hidden from view – this was achieved by placing them in the gallery section of the kitchen space.

The use of a retractable door system allowed for the ovens and the drinking zone to be hidden when not in use.

The island became the centrepiece of the industrial design direction, featuring a unique treatment allowing it to float above the floor with a framed system.

The porcelain bench provides strength and durability.

Structural lacquer doors on the island – an industrial textured paint finish – work well with the warmth of dark oak textured wood veneer on the tall cabinets, creating a beautiful design touch.

The circular structural post was clad in a pearl mosaic to match the splashback, creating a connection here.

The timber flooring was selected in a whitewashed oak finish as a contrast against the dark oak and titanium colour doors.

The crystal pendant lighting over the dining table was matched to the pendants over the island, creating the soft and sophisticated look of the 40s.
