Low maintenance design and atmospheric lighting are just two practical advantages of this bathroom that's in tune with its 2000s-built apartment

Designed by Elliot Johnson, E J Building

From the designer:

Owners' requests

  • A bathroom to complement their townhouse built in the 2000s.
  • Low maintenance

What we achieved

  • A shower partition wall was added to avoid having to use glass in the bathroom, keeping to the low maintenance brief – this was built at 1.8m high to align with a tile module, ensuring that it didn’t make the space feel enclosed.
  • A full width shelf was added behind the bath and also the shower – these were set a different height and were both set to a line with tile modules.
  • 50mm directional downlights were added to the ceiling to cast light down the wall of the bath / shower as a feature – these were set up with a sensor and dimmer so there is a soft light for the toilet to be used in the night without having to turn the main lights on.

Issues encountered

  • Being a townhouse with a concrete mid-floor, we didn’t have the option of relocating fixtures without the project becoming a major undertaking.
