Forming part of a beach house, this bathroom draws on beachy-toned elements – the result is a laid-back feel that connects with the wider home

From the designer:

The setting

Perched atop the Pukehina sand dunes in the Bay of Plenty, this coastal home is a combination of relaxed modernity and rustic touches.

I was given the task of translating our homeowner's enthusiasm for a laid-back beach lifestyle into the very fabric of the home.

The design brief was clear: to create a rustic-modern beach house that was both relaxed and tranquil, while still retaining a homely feel.

The interior design draws heavily from the natural landscape and palette.

For the kitchen, bathrooms, and living spaces, we chose lighter sandy tones, reflecting the beach just steps away.

Crushed Terrazzo tiles from the Tile Warehouse in soft cool-grey and white tones mimic pebbles and shells found on the shore.

White glazed tiling on the walls creates a subtle contrast, and the warm timber vanity by St Michel is reminiscent of driftwood.

A large, luxurious shower area with a rainfall showerhead is enclosed with frameless glass to create a sense of openness and light, and the gunmetal tapware by Robertson adds another tonal layer to the palette.

Panoramic views of the sea and Whakaari / White Island add to the aesthetic, in the home co-created by JMAC Architecture and DC Builders.
