Divided spaces bring improved functionality in this bathroom renovation

Three teen boys and one undersized main bathroom – this Kira Gray renovation is ideally zoned to family needs

Do you want the best possible bathroom for a reasonable outlay? Engaging award-winning designer Kira Gray is how to achieve just that.

“This family of five with three teen boys was struggling with their cramped main bathroom. The toilet was separate, which was great, but the modest bathroom was crowded out with a too-small shower, bath and vanity,” says Gray.

“For the new design, the owners wanted a large bath for Mum, a walk-in shower with a shower rose high enough for a 1.93cm-tall lad, and a vanity and ample storage for all three boys.”

With other bathrooms to be addressed, the design had to be cost effective, plus it had to work with the scale of the large colonial home.

“The usual all-in-one bathroom concept was not going to work here. More space was needed.

“A small bedroom next to the toilet was made into the mother’s haven – a relaxing space devoted to a bath and a glass of wine.”

The feminine bathing space has a glistening feature tile wall centred behind the deep bath. Floated and back-lit, this adds to the tranquil air of this relaxing sanctuary.

“The toilet stays separate. Used by three boys, tiles run floor to ceiling for an easy clean.”

With the bath removed, the bathroom is now home to a large walk-in shower and vanity.

“The shower has a ceiling-mounted drencher – ideal for the tall boys – along with a wall-mounted rose. The grey-stained oak vanity has ample storage, while three wood mirror-fronted cabinets means there’s one for each boy.”

Tapware and fittings are cost-effective but the tiles were the splurge. A quality silky grey floor tile is laid across all three rooms to connect the spaces and give an illusion of one large overall bathroom scaled to the home.
