Masonry construction has been used to build houses throughout Europe for centuries. Today, this traditional, durable method is being used locally to complete a diverse range of contemporary designs.

The four-bedroom family home pictured here was designed by architect Daniel Bulog in conjunction with builder and project manager Mike Seselj from Lifestyle Masonry Homes.

"Our aim was to create a well-appointed modern home with a real architectural presence," says Seselj. "It also needed to be comfortable to live in and able to cater to the New Zealand lifestyle."

The design features spacious, open-plan kitchen, dining and family living areas with northwest-facing decks. Through sliding doors is a separate formal lounge with a gas fireplace. For winter evenings, the house is warmed by underfloor heating.

Private decks are also found off two of the four bedrooms, including the master suite, which has an ensuite bathroom and a walk-in wardrobe.

The interior schemes, devised by Tanja Seselj, feature a palette of calming neutral tones.
