A combination of textures and colours creates a contemporary aesthetic in this townhouse

For maximum design impact, you could use bright colours and prominent textures, but the problem with this approach is that the design may date. Contrasting neutral tones, along with natural and man-made textures, often creates a subtle and longer-lasting aesthetic.

Developer Ken Vaughan hoped to strike this balance between clean lines and dramatic impact with the design of this inner-city townhouse. Through a recommendation from his Carters account manager Denis Richardson, Vaughan approached Yellowfox to design the interior and exterior colour schemes, and select products for the bathrooms and kitchens.

Yellowfox designers Claire Bruford and Andrea Burney worked on the project. Burney says neutrals were chosen to play on light and shadow, and natural textures and raw materials were employed throughout the home, to balance visual warmth with an industrial feel.

"We specified very dark colours to contrast with very light tones, and complement the owner's eclectic furniture collection. A stark white stone benchtop and painted stools offset the slatted walnut island front, which in turn calls attention to the grainy polished-concrete flooring," she says.

The kitchen by Hewe Kitchen & Interiors features cabinetry lacquered in Resene Bokara Grey, which relates to the concrete elements.

Yellowfox's industry connections were put to use with the array of high-profile brands specified in the design. An unusual AEG wall canopy rangehood by Electrolux adds shine and a sense of visual interest to the back wall of the kitchen. In the bathrooms, high-end Robertson vanities were specified.

"We have strong associations with many well-known companies in the building sector, so if we can't provide a particular service, we can refer you to a specialist who can," says Bruford.
