For centuries, architects have used stone in various forms to create solid, substantial-looking homes.

Today, stone continues to be a favoured material amongst design professionals and homeowners who recognise the advantages of its aesthetic appeal, strength and durability.

Stone specialists from Original Stone worked closely with the owners of this home and created the stone surfaces throughout the exterior and interior spaces. As a large, family house in a rural setting, its perimeters are defined by walkways, terraces and an extensive recreation area that includes a swimming pool. To highlight these outdoor spaces, the owners chose Tuscan® sandstone in Sand. The sandstone's non-slip and low-maintenance properties ensure a safe surface around pool, that will not become slippery and dangerous when splashed with water. Despite being durable and dense, sandstone is a versatile material. It can be carved and shaped to achieve detailing such as bull-nose edging around swimming pools. Here, the neutral coloured stone has been teamed with teak and used to form the low retaining walls that double as seating.

From the home's recreation area, bifold doors open to reveal the kitchen, which in turn flows into an informal dining room. Throughout these rooms, Tuscan sandstone was used to provide a hard-wearing and attractive surface that helps to emphasise the home's connection with the outdoors. To further accentuate this connection, the tiles have been placed on a constant grid in exterior and interior spaces.

The centrepiece of the kitchen is a large island topped with honed Nevada¢ slate in Blue. At 2.7m x 1.6m, the generously proportioned benchtop features a thickness of 30mm. The strength of the slate enabled the team from Original Stone to create the island's cantilevered breakfast bar and curved ends. Impervious to water and acid-resistant, Nevada benchtops are hygienic and well suited to food preparation areas.

For the more formal living areas of the home, the owners chose Tuscan sandstone in Bianco. It is used on the lounge and entry foyer floors, fireplace, stairs and landings. Much of the stonework throughout the home required the team from Original Stone to pay close attention to detail. The treads on the stairway, for example, had to be made to individual templates, then carved by a stonemason to create the specific contours.
