From the designer:

The owners requested a large family friendly open kitchen with clear sight lines to the gardens and pool beyond. They also wanted the new kitchen to be in keeping with their home’s early 1900s architecture.

The existing kitchen was dark, cold and removed from the main living spaces.

By repositioning the kitchen, it now flows through to the main living spaces and connects with the garden and outdoor areas.

The strong feature of the design is the custom-made steel rangehood. This sets the stage and links the prep and wash zones with the adjacent pantry. The working pantry houses hidden appliances with dual fridges set alongside, all integrated to reinforce the traditional detailing.

The island provides storage for crockery and tableware and the front overhang creates room for informal seating.

A traditional cabinetry style with panelled doors, fluted columns and cornices has been used. 

Further attention to detail can be seen in the solid dovetailed timber drawers, solid stained French oak basket weave detail to the island top, solid stained oak carcasses and the integrated appliances.

A classic palette of off-white joinery and engineered benchtops sets the backdrop to the central island with its dark stained solid timber benchtop and drawer fronts.

Polished chrome nickel cup handles and knobs, along with the oiled rimu floors and brick bond tiled splashbacks nod to the 1900s era of architecture.

Lighting was kept simple and understated so that the kitchen connects with the site lines of the main living room and outdoor areas.

The result is a kitchen that is now unified within the surrounding living spaces; a showpiece with eye-catching detail and function.
