Context is everything and these bathrooms form part of a rugged board-formed home set up against a rocky cliff face. The home’s interior extends this palette with concrete, clean white walls and the introduction of timber ceilings to link spaces through the full height doors.

There are strong visual connections with the natural elements outside – from the basalt rockface and leafy green canopies to the waterway on the home’s boundary. In fact, the bathroom windows achieve a picture like framing of the natural world outside.

In the bathrooms, including the ensuite, the interior timber elements are also taken further, with large-format timber-look porcelain tiles, punctuated only by black, glass and the white of the bath. This complements the pared back material choice used throughout the wider design.

Nothing here is too perfect; instead, each element offering a slightly different texture, which creates warmth, a sense of calm and peacefulness.

The hidden door to the ensuite is faced in a 3m high tile which when closed cocoons the bathroom and creates a feeling of privacy and completeness. This door is heavy, but thanks to its hidden hardware and magnetic closers it opens softly and smoothly.

The bathroom lighting provides a gentle wash down the face of the tiles, accentuating their finish.

The floor to ceiling mirror is 1.8m wide and 3m high. This mirrors the tiles behind and – being full length – is highly practical.

The state-of-the-art systems in the bathrooms complement the home’s snug, air tight construction and high level of insulation. The bathrooms feature hydronic underfloor heating as well as heat recovery and air exchange systems.
