Uncluttered surfaces and dramatic lines offer a sense of escape in this bathroom

The master suite is the owners' refuge from the commotion of the household. More than an area to sleep and bathe, it is the place to relax uninterrupted by demands of family and guests.

Architect John Staff chose a sleek-lined approach to the design of this master bathroom. His design reflects not only the home's beachfront location but also the owners' desire for a room that is light, airy and open to the ocean view.

The most striking features of the bathroom are the curved vanities made from cherry wood. The cabinet by the bath and the seated vanity opposite the shower visually balance the Douglas fir ceiling in the adjoining bedroom.

"The grain in cherry wood acquires a warm red patina over time. This desire for materials that age, rather than weather, is reflected throughout the house. For example, we have used copper and bronze on the external walls," Staff says.

Creating beautiful spaces, rather than focusing on functional needs has meant that the curved cabinet offers little storage space. Also, the backsplash has been replaced by a full length mirror that extends from the countertop to the ceiling.

The mirror and the room's metallic fixtures and hardware are tied into the design of both vanities. Each features a stainless steel lip between the marble countertop and the wooden cabinets.

At the seated vanity, the plumbing is covered with a cherry wood panel.

"Everything operates beautifully, but the workings are disguised so that there is an impression of effortless beauty, of ease and comfort," Staff says.

Glass light fittings have been installed straight onto the mirror so that when reflected in the glass they look like hearts. These fittings offer side illumination to assist with makeup application, while the heart shape they create is a visual sign that this is a feminine space.

Inside the shower, above the bath and in the center of the ceiling, windows are positioned to flood the room with natural light.
