Asian accentuation

Working with the constraints of a condominium setting, this kitchen reorganises everything and adds an Asian-influenced rear cabinet wall as a feature

Designed by Meghan Browne & Jennifer Gilmer, Jennifer Gilmer Kitchen & Bath

From the designers:

The original kitchen was fairly new, but did not meet the needs and aesthetics of the new homeowners.

We sought to completely reconfigure the space.

The entire condo was redesigned from top to bottom with a clean, modern take, inspired by Asian design principals and the kitchen was to continue with this design aesthetic.

Challenges

Condo building remodels tend to pose additional challenges such as existing plumbing, venting and drain locations cannot be moved.

Challenges can evoke creativity and design solutions not otherwise considered, which is how we approached this Bethesda condo remodel.

Meticulous design detail

The kitchen was meticulously thought through with every drawer having a specific storage.

The Japanese Ash tall cabinet contains bi-folding, retractable doors  revealing an appliance garage for the coffee maker, toaster and blender.

For the contemporary remodel we used a refrigerator and freezer column side by side, moved them to the back wall, and applied square door panels onto the fronts.

We then added a narrow pantry that fitted into the old doorway and used the same style doors, hiding pantry items until needed.

This made the appliances invisible while creating a visual focal point – we also moved the cooktop to the other side so that the wall in the hallway could be reduced.

The hood moved with it of course so we hid that by connecting it to a Japanese Ash dropped ceiling panel and then a cabinet of the same colour that reaches down to the countertop.

This cabinet has bi-fold/retractable doors and houses their coffee machine and much more.
