The requirements were for multiple living spaces and/or a potential additional income. Entertaining was a must and so the spaces needed to facilitate large gatherings and remain comfortable when used every day. The owner is a builder and this was to be his family home as well as a showcase for his company. The spaces needed to not only function for a family home, but the design also needed to show off quality workmanship with a focus on materiality. The design was approached to take advantage of the width of the site while also leaving enough space at the rear for additional detached structures facing the laneway. The site allowed for the main dwelling house, detached studio and a secondary dwelling to be constructed on the lot. A strong industrial style was envisioned, incorporating exposed recycled effect brick, concrete, and steel cladding for the development. This played to the brick homes in the area and also lent authenticity to the density of the development.Large expanses of steel framed glazing gives the entry foyer and staircase a pared back luxury and warehouse feel. Thoughtfully considered landscape areas to the side of the dwelling provide privacy to ground floor windows and visual interest to the occupants in areas traditionally neglected and reserved for unsightly services. The floor plan of the development is meticulous in providing for the needs of the owner and presenting clever and elegant design solutions. The highlight of this home, however, is the enthusiastic manner which, both the client and designer approached the materiality of the finishes. The builder has shown immense attention to detail in relaying the design intent and allowing the materials to shine.
