Strategically and elegantly designed, this kitchen – with finely crafted cabinetry from RH Cabinetmakers – combines a warm aesthetic with efficient functionality

For this design, by Sang Architects, the owners wanted a kitchen to satisfy three key functions while maintaining a tidy visual cohesion.

Essentially, they requested a public kitchen where they could entertain guests while preparing food together with a more private kitchen zone where they can store things like the coffee maker, crockery and cook books and don’t need to put them away after each use.

And lastly, they also wanted an area where they could sit down to have a casual meal together with their grandchildren.

However, one tricky aspect to the design was that the existing room has a corner with a 45 degree wall.

In response to the homeowners’ requests, and that awkward corner angle, the architects created a U-shaped kitchen with a tall cabinet bank that separates the public and private kitchens.

The public area is denoted visually by a dark L-shaped benchtop and crafted timber overhead cupboards – all the cabinetry in the kitchen was manufactured by RH Cabinetmakers.

The public zone continues back to meet the 45 degree junction and this is where the private area starts and then continues out of sight behind a cabinet bank containing the pantry and refrigerator. The private zone is marked with a light benchtop and contrasted with a dark overhead cupboard.

A wall formed by the fridge and pantry separates these two areas. There is also a 900mm high bench created by the cantilevered benchtop where guests can pull up a high-chair to chat to the host who is cooking dinner. Another lower table is located at the end of this bench.

This kitchen was a TIDA Architect-designed Kitchen finalist.
