Modern Kitchen Design

This village house was built around 1750, long before modern kitchens – or even electricity – were considerations for builders. The family, a husband and wife with a 20-year-old daughter and two teenage boys, moved in around 12 years ago. Since then they have renovated and remodelled. They’ve brought the interior up to modern standards while accentuating the beauty of the internal truss construction. However, they weren’t ready to progress with their plans for the kitchen until around three or four years ago.Having seen a friend’s Poggenpohl kitchen they were impressed by its quality and style and so contacted the Poggenpohl studio in Dresden. They came up with a design that picks up the black and white motif of the marble tiled floor with matt white units and black worktops. Although the clients had already decided on a monochromatic colour scheme they were open to suggestions about everything else. For example, Poggenpohl Dresden proposed arranging the kitchen around a large island unit with an integrated hob and downdraft ventilation, overcoming the usual difficulties encountered with older, low-ceiling properties. Despite the traditional setting, the style is modern and minimalist which works remarkably well. The owners appreciated the professional advice from their designer about the most efficient and workable layout for major appliances, storage and working areas.
