Embarking on a reliable and rewarding career path provides a valuable starting point in life. A skilled trade that is in hot demand here and in other countries around the globe is an excellent option.

The Plumbing, Gasfitting and Drainlaying Industry Training Organisation, or PGD ITO, offers advice and apprenticeship leads to those thinking of taking up one of these fulfilling trades.

Ian Elliott, chief executive of the PGD ITO, says plumbing provides a good example of the many advantages.

"Plumbers are in short supply and are rarely out of work the fact that you often have to book them well in advance is proof of this," says Elliott. "In addition, wages are reassuringly high plumbers earn an average of $45,000 to $75,000 a year.

"Apprentices are paid as they learn, meaning there are no hefty student loans to pay back when your apprenticeship is concluded."

The National Certificate in Plumbing and Gasfitting takes between three and five years to complete, and involves both on- and off-job training. The ITO arranges for apprentices to attend block courses at local polytechnics around the country for off-job learning. Distance learning modules are undertaken as part of an apprentice's on-job instruction.

Apprenticeship options are varied. You may work on a large construction project for a local council, or undertake smaller jobs on residential properties.
