Pre-finished oak veneer floors are practical in high use areas

IN A BUSY gym it is important to direct foot traffic to maximise the use of space and leave the areas around heavy weight machines clear. In order to make it visually clear to users which route they should take, walkways in a light wood veneer were laid in the Les Mills Hutt City gym, connecting the various spaces.

A prefinished floor was particularly suitable for this project, since it is quick to lay. Indeed it can be fitted while other contractors are working as there is no sanding and sealing to be done.

Moxon Timber supplied and laid the prefinished oak veneer flooring and the matching solid wood skirtings and stair risers. Manager Bob Moore says the tight time frame and high volume of product required made this a challenging job.

"Laying 500m² of flooring was a big ask, particularly since all the various subcontractors were working around each other right up to the last minute," he says. "To Freear Philip's credit, we all got it done and the gym opened on time."

Moxon Timber supplies prefinished flooring in a wide range of different timbers, colours and finishes. The company is the exclusive New Zealand agent for prefinished flooring by the Australian manufacturer Boral. Some of the different options available include jarrah, Victorian ash, spotted gum, and pilularis.

"Anything to do with timber, we can do," says Moore. "A prefinished floor is great for certain scenarios, such as a small apartment. But our focus is timber. We are timber importers to the joinery trade and we create solid wood floors for all kinds of projects, from school gymnasiums to upmarket houses."

"Some of the more popular timbers for solid wood floors are kwila, Victorian ash, the various American oaks and maples and of course the full range of New Zealand natives and Australian species," he says.
