The giant screens used in this gym are particularly high-tech

It is not unusual for a gym to use a variety of conventional television and plasma screens to entertain its members as they toil on the treadmills. Some of the screens used in the Les Mills Hutt City facility, however, are quite out of the ordinary.

The screens shown here are concave projector screens, supplied by Vidcom. Far brighter than flat projector screens, they have several features, aside from the obvious curve, that make them ideally suited to this space.

Managing director of Vidcom Mike Lovell says the concave screens, known as Vidcom Digital Daytime Concave screens, work in spaces that are filled with light from other sources be they daylight or electric.

"A projected image is very difficult to see on a traditional flat screen, unless you watch it in a darkened room. These screens, however, reflect the projected light straight back at the viewer, making the image so clear that it appears to be coming out of the screen, rather than being projected on to it," says Lovell.

The Vidcom screens are manufactured from multiple layers of silver alumina oxide. The product won the CES Innovation Award three years in a row in the USA, as well as three technology awards in Korea.

The screens used at Les Mills Hutt City posed a challenge in terms of their transportation.

"Two of the screens weighed in at 90kg each, and the other was 140kg, so for us, the only issue with this project was freighting them," says Lovell.

Vidcom specialises in supplying and installing a wide range of presentation equipment, including projectors, plasma and LCD screens, professional audio and home theatre equipment, widescreen televisions, electronic whiteboards and video conferencing equipment. All of the company's products are available for sale, rent or lease. Vidcom can also provide large outdoor screens and video and LED walls.
