There are many secrets to designing a traditional kitchen, including providing a sense of symmetry and proportion. So too, is knowing how to combine different textural elements to ensure that no single material overwhelms the interior.

This remodeled kitchen, designed by Laurie Lehrich of Design Galleria, presents a mix of rich, warm materials a cozy, inviting look that was inspired by the owners' mountain vacation home.

Lehrich says the couple are the original owners of the Buckhead, Atlanta house, which was built nearly 30 years ago.

"While the owners still love the house, the existing kitchen was dated and the space was not maximized. Remodeling the kitchen provided an opportunity to improve these things. I was fortunate to be able to work with the team that worked on the original house the same building company, Goodsell Associates, and the same interior designer, Sherri Austin."

A wall between the kitchen and a pantry and laundry room was removed and a deep alcove created for a new bank of knotty alder wood cabinets. This is framed by a large arch featuring reclaimed bricks, which now line the entire kitchen.

"The clients wanted the kitchen to have plenty of visual interest," says Lehrich. "They love the idea of a dramatic kitchen that provides the wow factor. The bricks help to achieve this. They introduce a lot of texture, as does the wide plank wood flooring, salvaged from old barns."

However, the centerpiece of the kitchen, on the opposite wall from the alcove, is the cooking center. This features a large La Cornue range and a matching custom hood made from antique brass with mirrored brass strapping.

The brick backsplash incorporates a reverse hammered image of a live oak tree in antique brass the owners have similar trees on another property. The kitchen also has a new ceiling, featuring antique hemlock wood and cross beams.

"Symmetry is a key part of a traditional kitchen," says Lehrich. "For this reason, the island is a similar length to the cooking center and alcove. But there was extra space at one end of the kitchen, so I added a furniture-style wood butcher's block to the island. Visually, the island appears to have the same proportions as the cooking center, but it has an extra work surface."

The designer says the horizontal axis of the kitchen is further defined by the wood cabinets all the cabinetry on this axis is in stained walnut, while the perimeter cabinets have a painted, glazed finish.

Other special features of the kitchen include a new corner window seat, and a hidden door to a new pantry in the alcove.
