Part of what makes a classic bungalow distinctive is in the cladding. Linear siding, along with detailing such as eaves and trusses, makes for a stately look. When building a new house, it is possible to re-create this look, with new materials that are more durable than their timber equivalent, and provide a deep shadow line.

Artisan Lap, the result of 15 years of development and research by James Hardie, is a premium line of architectural-grade building materials that has the same look as timber wood, but offers the benefits of fiber cement, says PJ Rosch, senior product manager, Artisan, for James Hardie Building Products.

"The look of the lap is very natural similar to cedar yet it offers greater protection against rotting, cracking and damage from inclement weather, with all the low maintenance benefits of fiber cement. It is a builder-preferred 5/8" thick lap, which provides a deep shadow line for an effective aesthetic."

It is due to the patented Duratech technology that James Hardie has been able to create this level of thickness, while the tongue and groove design allows end joints to fit tightly together for easy installation and a precise fit and finish. Artisan Exterior Design offers versatility in terms of both design and build, says Rosch.

"Artisan Lap boards are light enough for a single person to handle and the thickness allows architects and designers the freedom to create individual profiles."

Since its introduction in 2002, Artisan has demonstrated proven performance and durability in Australia and New Zealand. The product made its American debut at Reynolds Plantation near Atlanta, and will be in limited release throughout the United States in 2008.
