To enhance the luxury of this parents' retreat, the architect-owner designed his-and-hers bathrooms each with its own special character

No matter how much we appreciate the benefits of modern technology in our homes, there is still a place for traditional detailing.

In this new home, for example, the Arts and Crafts movement provided the design inspiration. It's a style that enhances a welcome sense of retreat in the master suite, says architect and owner John Cordogan.

"The interior of the house needed to be consistent with the Arts and Crafts theme," he says. "In the master suite, the high gabled ceiling, traditional French doors and paneled wainscoting help to create the sense of a private space."

Cordogan says that while the overall design of the house is a modern interpretation of the original Arts and Crafts style, it still maintains the essence of the movement.

"There is a consistency in the detailing, from the height of the wainscoting and doors to the style of the fixtures and fittings," he says.

This influence flows through to the his-and-hers bathrooms off the master bedroom. The tiled Mexican marble walls in both rooms feature wide bands of glass mosaic tiles at the same height as the bedroom's wainscoting.

The bathroom furniture also reflects the traditional design influence. His bathroom has a freestanding Kohler Memoirs console, well suited to the slightly spartan locker room ambiance. Her bathroom features a solid natural walnut vanity with matching countertop, and overhead cabinetry.

Both rooms feature walnut flooringin a natural finish, and Pakistani woven rugs. Fixtures and fittings have also been chosen for their traditional look.

"We went for plain, chrome fittings no gold or frills," says Cordogan.

To further enhance the sense of a luxury retreat, her bathroom includes a spa bath and bidet. It also opens to a study, which Cordogan says is a private boudoir a place to escape the busy household.

Lighting has also been designed to suit the mood, with different light levels available in each room.
