The sheer scale of the project naturally impacted on all aspects of the subcontracting work, not least the expanses of roofing needed to cover the vast shopping spaces. The Roofing Specialists installed a number of roofing and cladding products on The Base, says general manager Craig Lowry.

"Dimond Steelspan 900 was used as the main roofing product across Noel Leeming, Bond and Bond, Briscoes and Rebel Sport, as well as for the Number 1 Shoe Warehouse block," he says. "The majority of challenges for us centred around the integration into the existing The Warehouse building, ensuring weather-tight integrity was maintained throughout."

Corrugated Zincalume was used as an underslung, steel ceiling product for some of the eye-catching canopies. Again scale proved important in their installation.

"The issue we had was trying to secure this product where some of the sheets were 18m long and had to hang in excess of 10m above the ground," says Lowry. "To address this issue, we used two working platforms in unison, together with props and additional manpower to get the product into place while it was tek screwed."
