Reinventing a bathroom to be more in tune with its classic surroundings is a request of many homeowners. The tricky part can be evoking a gracious air in a room that is sometimes an awkward shape dictated by upgrades to adjacent rooms.

For this project, the owners asked designer Bruce Goode and the Bubbles Bathrooms design team to give their L-shaped bathroom a dramatic presence more in keeping with their period home, says Goode.

"Improved storage and a space-saving layout were also important as was inclusion of a bathtub," says Goode.

"To achieve the aesthetic required, we introduced a large oval tub to take centre stage. To nestle the bath within the limited space, we built a custom surround to connect with its curved form on one side."

To heighten the drama, Goode added a curved wall of mosaic tiles behind the bath. In addition, he set off the feature tub with a chandelier.

"This has an immediate impact from the entry," says Goode, "and yet, the bath does not take up the whole room."

The open shower is set to the left of the tub, separated by a glass partitioning wall. This arrangement means the bathing area borrows space visually from the shower area, which is partially tucked into the foot of the L-shaped room.

Other aspects of the project included the placement of the vanity and substantial mirrors. These bounce light around the space, increase the size of the bathroom to the eye and also conceal wall cabinets.

The practical aspects of the project included reconfiguring the hydronic heating as well as tucking the cistern out of sight around the corner of the entry.

"With all spatial and visual aspects resolved, the client now has a haven to retreat to," says Goode. "Reinstated mouldings, the feature tub and high-end lighting all up the ante to suit the look of the Victorian home."
