GIVEN THE individualistic nature of the overall precinct, one-of-a-kind elements are found in many of the retail stores and hospitality venues in the street. The Wagamama restaurant includes an eye-catching floating' staircase element.

Design and construct steel fabricators Jamar Industries created dramatic features for three Nuffield Street venues, explains manager Brent Apps.

"For the Wagamama restaurant, we engineered and manufactured a stair that appeared to have little or no supporting steel," says Apps. "The solution was in utilising a central stringer system, with out-riggers to give support to the stair extremities that had to carry the load of the curved wall of the feature tubing. In addition, we fabricated the steelwork for the restaurant's custom furniture."

The company also built the steel framework that contributes to and supports a massive fireplace feature at Mac's Brew Bar.

"Here, the challenge was to support the wood feature over the fireplace without having steel columns running down to the floor," says Apps. "A cradle of steel frames secured to the underside of the roof structure provided a solution to this problem."

Jamar was involved in another staircase in the Nuffield Street development as well this time out of the public eye in the Watercare offices, upstairs in the Mercury Energy building.

"We created job-specific tooling to construct the stainless steel stair balustrading on this," he says.

In addition to steel fabrication, Jamar imports Olis Catering equipment for the commercial market and designs and installs Juralco Aluminium Walkmaster and Guardsafe Personnel Safety Accessways.
