Double take

Difficult renovation projects can result in the most dramatic transformations, as this country property demonstrates.

The original house on the site, built in the 1970s, was large but uninspiring, says Don Nelson of Don Nelson Architecture.

"We needed to balance the existing steeply gabled roof with a large, flat-roofed extension," Nelson says. "The solution was to dress up the entire facade, wrapping new curved elements right around the house, and pulling them out to accommodate the extension."

The distinctive, flowing curves, which are a signature of the firm's work, also feature on a first-floor addition.

"We take our cue from the natural world there are no straight lines in nature," says Nelson.

Other changes to the exterior include an expansive new north-facing terrace with adjustable overhead louvres.

On the interior, the transformation is equally impressive. The addition houses the family living areas, with the kitchen right at the centre of operations.

"Sydney designer Lance Dixon designed the spacious kitchen to follow the curve of the house. It has two islands and highly polished rosewood cabinetry reminiscent of a super yacht," says Nelson.
