With its clam-like vessel basin and marble vanity top, the master bathroom in this house reflects its beachfront location

The close proximity of the sea proved to be a strong design influence for this master bathroom. But the design approach is less obvious than that seen in many beachfront homes.

Architect Allan Powell referenced many elements of the marine environment in the design of the house both man-made and natural.

For the master bathroom there is also a sense of the beach. The aqueous translucency of shellfish is mimicked by the highly vitrified wall tiles; and the large, sculptural Parisi basin is reminiscent of a clam shell.

A thick Statuario marble vanity top has a striated appearance, similar to the tidal markings on a beach. Dark brown-green floor tiles also have a wet sand look. The tiles, which complement the dark-stained wood of the walk-through closet, help to visually anchor the space.

To make the small room appear larger, Powell added a near full-height mirror, which reflects the sea through the bedroom beyond. Large, mirrored cabinets and a cantilevered vanity also make the room seem more spacious.

Another space-enhancing feature is the high window in the bathroom, which allows plenty of natural light to flood the interior.
