A common misconception about houses that are environmentally friendly is that they require occupants to swap comfort for austerity. This home, a showcase of sustainable design, proves green building is the way of the future.
Suncadia, a four-season, 6000-plus acre resort community, provides what could be considered an ideal location for the home. Surrounded by forests, trails and golf courses, the development's focus is on enjoying the benefits of the great outdoors. Built by custom-home builder Grey Lundberg/CMI Homes, this home is comfortable, durable, environmentally friendly and cost-effective to own and operate. This drive towards green began with developer Brenda Nunes, who worked with Grey Lundberg to study every aspect of the house for green improvement potential.
The house was built following the parameters of the Built Green program. It's a commitment beginning at ground level, with any trees removed from the site milled and used as construction components, limited on-site infiltration and permeable pavers to reduce the effect on storm water drainage.
Another priority was management of construction waste. Insulated concrete forms and metal roofing reduce reliance on raw lumber. Pre-finished shingles, flooring and woodwork hasten construction and limit the toxic chemicals released into the home.
The finishes specified are designed to appeal to discriminating homeowners. Surface materials are attractive, durable, and easy to clean, and, if possible, made from recycled content. To improve indoor air quality, a state-of-the-art filtration system and environmentally friendly paints, sealants and insulation were selected.
